서울교방 Seoul Gyobang Dance Company
Seoul Gyobang Dance Company is a contemporary dance ensemble dedicated to preserving and reimagining the rich traditions of Korean dance. Founded with a vision to bridge the ancient art of Korean traditional dance with modern choreographic innovation, we have established ourselves as one of the leading cultural institutions in Seoul.
Our name, "Gyobang" (교방), refers to the historical institutions where traditional Korean arts were taught and performed. These were spaces where the most skilled artists gathered to perfect their craft and pass down their knowledge to future generations. In the spirit of these venerable institutions, Seoul Gyobang serves as both a guardian of tradition and a laboratory for artistic experimentation.
The company was established by a collective of artists who shared a common belief: that Korean traditional dance forms possess an inherent contemporary relevance that can speak to audiences across cultural and generational boundaries. Our repertoire encompasses both faithful recreations of classical Korean dances and bold new works that draw inspiration from traditional movement vocabularies while exploring themes relevant to our contemporary moment.
At the heart of our practice is a deep respect for the fundamental principles of Korean dance: the subtle interplay between restraint and expression, the circular flow of energy, and the profound connection between movement and breath. Our dancers undergo rigorous training in traditional forms including court dances, folk dances, and ritual dances, while also developing skills in contemporary dance techniques.
Seoul Gyobang has performed extensively throughout Korea and internationally, receiving acclaim for our unique artistic vision. We regularly collaborate with musicians, visual artists, and choreographers from diverse backgrounds, creating multidisciplinary works that push the boundaries of what Korean dance can be. Our commitment extends beyond the stage through educational programs, workshops, and community outreach initiatives designed to make Korean dance accessible to new audiences.
We believe that dance is a living art form that must evolve while remaining rooted in its cultural heritage. Through our work, we seek to honor the past, engage with the present, and imagine new possibilities for the future of Korean dance. Each performance is an invitation to experience the beauty, depth, and relevance of this remarkable artistic tradition.
